Vaginismus symptoms vary from woman to woman. The common theme is uncomfortable, painful, or impossible vaginal penetration.

Symptoms of severe vaginismus include:

  • Difficulty inserting a tampon without extreme pain
  • Difficulty engaging in sexual intercourse without extreme pain
  • Attempting sexual penetration feels like the penis is "bumping into a wall," and trying to push through that wall causes extreme stinging or burning pain.
  • Difficulty getting pap smears and other vaginal examinations without extreme pain
  • Stinging pain and tightness of the vagina when pressure is applied in any context
  • Muscle spasms throughout the body when attempting intercourse

Symptoms of moderate vaginismus include:

  • Some discomfort inserting a tampon
  • Difficulty engaging in sexual intercourse without significant pain
  • Attempting sexual penetration feels like the walls of the vagina are tightening and stinging
  • Discomfort getting vaginal examinations

Symptoms of mild vaginismus include:

  • Tightness or slight stinging during sexual intercourse
  • Pain or discomfort when trying new sexual positions
  • Mild discomfort when getting vaginal examinations
